Structure
The IKEA Hjellestad mattress differs in structure from other IKEA spring mattresses. It consists of multiple layers, two of which are spring layers. The main layer and the additional mini spring layer are made of high quality steel.
The rest of the mattress consists of three comfort layers. One layer is polyurethane memory foam of 3.1 PCF, the second is regular poly foam of 1.7 PCF and the third layer is another layer of polyurethane foam of 1.5 PCF.
Size
The five layers this mattress consists of make it 39 cm thick. The mattress weighs 51 kg which makes it difficult to move and transport. Unlike many IKEA’s mattresses, the Hjellestad does not come in all four sizes. Instead, it is available in full, king and queen size while twin size is not produced.
The full size Hjellestad spring mattress consists of 475 pocket springs and 475 mini pocket springs that add ore comfort when placed on top of the main spring layer. Note that the number of pocket springs varies, depending on the size of the mattress.
Materials
As mentioned above, the comfort material in this mattress is memory foam and polyurethane foam. Steel springs make the spring layers that give support to your body during sleep. The cover of the mattress is made of non-woven polypropylene, polyamide and combination of polyester and cotton.
The ticking is also a combination of polyester and cotton while the lining is done using non-woven polypropylene. The cover is removable and washable. However, it should not be bleached, tumble dried, dry cleaned or ironed.
What is interesting about this mattress and makes it stand out above other spring models is the protective cover that comes with it. This extra protective cover has handles that make the mattress easier to carry around. Once the mattress is in place, you simply have to unzip the cover and remove it.
How it feels
The overall thickness of the mattress can tell you a lot about how comfortable it is. The main pocket spring layer provides the right support, needed to make the mattress firm enough.
Thanks to additional foam layers, this mattress is not too soft nor too firm, which sorts it in the medium firm category. The mini springs layer on top of the main spring layer adds comfort and allows the mattress to follow your movement more efficiently.
The individually wrapped coil springs insulate movement very well, making it possible for you to turn in your sleep as much as you wont without waking up your partner.
The memory foam molds to the shape of your body and fits you just right. It gets back in flat shape very quickly after you move from that one spot you’ve been on for a while. This layer also enhances blood circulation and relaxation of your whole body. The generous fillings other than memory foam are two layers of poly foam that add enough softness to balance out the situation.
Even though there are no customers’ reviews that confirm the off-gassing issue, it is to be expected that the mattress will release a chemical odor a few weeks. Air the mattress out on a balcony or any room with good air flow to ensure the off-gassing process ends quickly. The IKEA Hjellestad mattress is designed to be used on one side only, meaning there is no need to turn it over.

The price of the IKEA Hjellestad mattress depends on its size. A mattress of this quality for a price lower than 1000$ is very difficult to find on the market. Therefore, trying out IKEA mattresses is highly recommended.
A huge inconvenience is the fact that this mattress does not come roll packed. Meaning, transporting it in a car by yourself will be a struggle, keeping in mind that the mattress weighs 51 kg and wont be moved that easily. To save yourself the struggle, opting for IKEA’s shipping service is a great idea. However, it will open up additional costs and the mattress will take about a week to arrive.
As usual, IKEA offers a 25 year warranty on all their mattresses, including the Hjellestad. During the warranty period, the company will be responsible for all manufacturing defaults and none customers’ faults. Besides the warranty, IKEA offers a generous trial period which lasts one year.
Therefore, you have 365 days to try out the mattress and if you don’t like it, you can exchange it for another model as long as yours is clean and undamaged. Other than that, IKEA doesn’t offer any exchanges such as money refunds.
