Use the calculator to match proportions for framed prints, canvases, and wider gallery pieces.
Choosing the right size of picture light, you commonly think, that it is complex but indeed it is not when you understand the basics. Usually you want what is between half and two thirds of the width of the artwork. There is quite a broad range of possible sizes so do not worry too much about precise numbers.
The main goal is to reach equal spread of the light above the whole image
How to Choose the Right Size Picture Light
Some guidelines advise that picture light do not surpass 50-75% of the width of the artwork. Another mode is to choose light between 60% and 80% of the size of the image, frame included. Also, one method offers 1/2 to 1/3 of the picture size, but without frame.
So it a bit depends on whether you count the fraem or no.
For photographs at least 30 inches wide, you choose picture light around 18 inches. At frames under 30 inches half of the size already suffices. Ideal is light that is third bigger or smaller than the artwork itself.
At images of 60 inches you need 45-inch light or 3/4 of the width. Other factors, as the darkness of the artwork, also affect the decision.
You find also practical charts for sizes. Artworks of 8 to 14 inches go with 4.5-inch light. For bits 12 to 18 inches, 5.5 inches will operate.
Images 16 to 24 inches require 7 to 9 inches. In 18 to 35 inches, 10 to 13 inches answer. For 25 to 37 inches you require 14.5 to 16-inch lights.
Up of 38 inches, 30-inch light or several will do the task. Anything in the range will operate, but the center is the best. Picture lights shine down in around 40 inches.
Hardwired picture lights confine the size and position of the artworks that can hang here. That type answers perfectly for big or precious art that stays permanently visible. They operate also well as directional down-light on built-in bookcase.
Similarly to wall sconces, they connect to junction box in the wall. Battery-operated picture lights answer for smaller bits.
The BRYNET LED picture light of IKEA come black in 22 inches and give directional light for highlight images or other objects. IKEA on a long-term basis had only one model of picture light. Elegant picture light add focus to the artwork and erect the right atmosphere.
At genuinely broad bits, as 2-meter chart, a broad light can be hardly found, the biggest available only 83 cm, so several lights occasionally are the solution.
