Use the average footprint carefully: a single hammer and a small wrench do not use the same board zone. If your wall mixes very different tools, run one estimate for small tools and one for bulky tools, then add the board areas.
Do not treat every square inch as usable: pegboard has 1 inch typical hole spacing, but handles, hook angles, bins, labels, and hand clearance reduce the practical usable area. A 60% to 80% setting is usually more realistic than 100%.
