5Removal method comparison
Gel strippers
Best all-around choice for vertical furniture, cabinet, and trim surfaces because the product stays wet longer and clings to edges.
Paste strippers
Useful on thick buildup, rough wood, and masonry. They cover fewer square feet per gallon but can reduce repeat applications.
Aerosol detail work
Efficient for tight corners, hardware marks, and small metal profiles, but poor for broad furniture or room trim coverage.
Heat plus scrape
Uses little chemical stripper, yet may need follow-up gel for residue, profiles, corners, and stubborn lower layers.
6Coverage tips
A common starting point for stripping paint is a plan. Maybe you’ve found a beat-up dresser you want to refinish. Or maybe you just want to change your cabinet color. When you crack the can, though, reality sets in. That smell! Sticky chemical! And no, it’s not coming off on the first go-round. Now comes panic-buying, since you overestimated at step one.
Here’s where this calculator kicks in. No more guessing. It is just a shopping list that will do what you need. People overestimate. And the main culprit is treating square feet as a straight math equation. If I have a 4′ wide x 8′ long door, then I use 32 sq ft of stripper. Nope, wrong. Not like that. Paint remover doesn’t work based off square footage; it works based on history and texture.
How to Know How Much Paint Stripper You Need
That’s why when you plug in the size on the top, the tool accounts for real life surfaces. One is a smooth door. Another is a door made from spindles. Another is a carved mantelpiece. There are huge differences there, and the calculator will adjust for those unseen surface. It will apply multipliers based on how many more square feet you’ll lose inside the nooks and crannies. In other words, you’re really buying all the spaces between the grains of wood. Most average labels don’t accounts for this.
Oh yeah, and then there’s the layering factor. Let’s say you’re working on something that has been repainted every ten years since nineteen hundred. You’re not stripping a single coat, baby. You’re up against a geologic feature. With this tool, you can enters the number of coats you suspect exist underneath the final coat. Every additional layer lengthens the dwell time. In other words, the stripper needs more time to soak in deeper. As long as the stripper is wet, it will also evaporate faster then if it has dried completely, so you must be careful. This is why dwell time matters so much. You don’t want the stripper to dry before it removes the paint. Then what? It is a waste of your time and a waste of your money. The calculator helps in planning around that evaporation by suggesting additional passes or buffers in case of heavy coating.
And what about the kind of stripper? That is also important. Citrus strippers are gentle, smell like oranges, and won’t hurt your furnitures, a good thing when stripping furniture in the home. They take time to work. Aggressive solvent strippers work fast but come with fumes (use a mask tightly fitted over your nose and mouth, or at least wide-open windows). How much coverage you get depends on the chemistry you use, as shown in the chart on this page. A pro gel may cover more sq ft/gal than a poultice paste will. But if you’re trying to tackle something rough-sawn or brick, a paste will go the distance; liquid wouldn’t stick to the surface anyway. Match the porosity of the wall with the vehicle of the stripper.
There is waste. Waste is another thing people don’t think about. Some gets stuck on the brush. Some ran down the side of the furniture and it is dripping off. Some is stuck in your test patch that you should of always do in some hidden corner. The amount lost seems annoying because it gets added as a buffer to the calculator so that you don’t find yourself halfway through and running out. Better to have a gallon too much than to have a half stripped chair and no more to go and finish the other side. It spits out a concrete number for you to pick up from the shelf. Those vague variables get translated into a purchase decision in the real world. I thought I needed two gallons of this, but the math tells me that I only need 1½, plus a safety margin.” Or the reverse: “I thought I needed 1½ gallons, but the math tells me that I’ll actualy need two. Either way, now you’ve got confidence to go into your local hardware store, not hope.
But ultimately, stripping paint is less about chemistry and more about prep, patience, and enough of the right stuff so you don’t spend half the project running to the store for another canister. So your hands are occupied scraping off old finish instead of scrambling to make more. Because you have a plan when you begin. And you stick to the formula. And you wind up with raw wood that looks like what your dream looked like at the start.
