The height is the most important measurement when choosing a nightstand lamp, and this is where many people make mistakes. If the lamp is too high, it will shine directly in your eyes, while a lamp too low gives only a small, useless pool of light on the nightstand. Recommended height for lamps beside the bed ranges from 24 to 30 inches, based on the height of the nightstand and the mattress.
Some practical tips are out there. One says to choose a lamp at two thirds of the height of the nightstand. Another suggests a lamp at the same height or up to 1.2 times higher than the nightstand.
How to choose the right nightstand lamp
The lamp shade should end at 1.5 times the height of the nightstand, usually between 24 and 36 inches. So for a nightstand of 24 inches, a lamp at around 27 inches will look best.
In a medium-sized bedroom a lamp of 24 to 36 inches works well. For a big room a lamp of 36 inches or more is better. With a high bed the lamp maybe needs to be higher than the nightstand, so that the light actually reaches the target.
Good height is around 2 feet with a small shade, tall enough to read without long shadows.
The width also matters. For a bigger bed you need bigger nightstands. For a wide nightstand choose a wider lamp, so that it matches the scale.
Generally the lamp should be around one third of the width of the nightstand. With an 18 inches wide nightstand a lamp with 6 inches wide base of the shade will feel proportionte. The shape, size and material of the lamp shade strongly affect both the appearance and the light.
A lamp of only 14 inches on a standard nightstand will seem too small (like from a dorm room). Sometimes lamps look too big, but a wide base or shade can however work well. Putting the lamp on books is another good idea to try.
The top of the nightstand should be no more than 6 inches higher than the mattress. Not only the mattress height matters, also the bed frame. The lamp should be easy to reach to turn it on and off.
A small lamp leaves space for a phone, a book and other things beside the bed. There do not exist strict rules for choosing a nightstand lamp, so think about size that fits the nightstand and style that suits the bedroom. For small nightstands small decorative lamps of 10 to 25 cm tall work best.
A yellow light creates a warm, comfortable feeling, while white light can seem too bright.
