The overhang above the island goes down to the part of the counter that goes beyond the edge of the base of the island. That design solution means comfortable seating. It makes the island perfect for eat relaxed or hang out during cook.
One from the most important parts of overhang over kitchen island is the chance to include seating!
How Much Overhang for Kitchen Island Seating
The usual overhang for kitchen islands usually ranges between 12 and 15 inches. Normally, for island counters you use of 12 until 18 inches. 12-inch depth works best in small kitchens.
For bigger islands allow until 15 inches. The depth also allows creative styles in design. It helps to protect the cabinets under crumbs, spills and general wear.
For parents with children bigger depth is helpful, because children often destroy things.
Particular sizes ensure comfort. For seating under normal tabletop you require 15 inches of knee room. At bar-high seating the standard is 12 inches.
For table-high you require 18 inches. In small space at least 12-inch depth must be for sitting, but 18 inches are ideal. Without enough depth sitting before the counter during meals or working isn’t comfortable.
Also matter to have around 30 cm above the workplan for knees and legs. For width allow around 60 cm each person or seats.
Support is important. The tabletop stay mostly in place thanks to weight, so the depth of seating area requires good support. If the island is not set to the floor, enough support is needed.
Supporting legs are needed, when the depth goes over 10 inches. The maximum space between those legs should not go over 32 inches. Thick stone materials as quartz or granite for big depth can require extra support.
Some suggest no support for more than 8 inches. Island with vast depth maybe requires legs. You use corbels or metal backs for example 16-inch quartzite.
Different setups change the look. Typical depth for seating leaves just enough space for knees comfortably, without feeling of packed against the cabinets. Even so, it can give to the island or peninsula asymetrical look according to the plan and view.
For useful and nice island you must choose the right depth for the seats.
