joist hanger are special metal that binds joist when they meet beam Its main task is give strong structural support. Use such joist hanger are safer and easier than the traditional method of “toenailing“. The word “hanger” show how it works: it keeps the joist in place.

Heavy models for engineered wood give high support, while code-compliant choices meet or surpass the industry standards for framing connections.
Those joist hanger stop the joist from twisting. Because of more contact points, each joist better bears its own weight. You can only drive so many nails in the wood before it splits.
In some cases, you cannot reach the side of the rim joist, so joist hanger is the best solution, for instance, when the joist is right against a wall.
Choose the right size. You must use the right joist hanger and not choose too small. The joist hanger must be wide and high.
If needed, fill the upper space so it is flush with the wood, and use nails that go entirely into the main joist. Beams should be at least double for joist hangers. Hanging joist from only one layer beam is not a good idea.
If joist does not sit fully on the seat of the joist hanger, maybe the near wall is too high and needs to be cut. Commonly you first set the joist and later add the joist hanger to strengthen them. If something is too tight, you can use shimming.
Other problem with nails in treated wood is that it shrinks and later pushes the nails out, which is another reason use joist hangers.
