IKEA Holmsbu Spring Mattress Review

IKEA Holmsbu Spring Mattress

IKEA mattresses are known for their high quality and affordable prices. At IKEA, all products have the quality and the price in proper proportions. Meaning, you get what you pay for but even the price you pay for very high quality is lower than what you might pay to other brands on the market.

Whilst that is the deal with all IKEA mattresses, the Holmsbu spring mattress stands out with an even better offer. IKEA has introduced new lower prices for this mattress, meaning every size of the mattress has a lowered price. Besides the quality, the second best thing IKEA offers are low prices, which is another reason why customers are very satisfied.

Structure

The IKEA Holmsbu spring mattress has quite a complex structure. It consists of two pocket spring layers that provide great support for the user. On top of the double spring layer is the mini pocket spring layer which adds comfort and enables the mattress to follow your body as it moves during sleep.

With the right support comes the right amount of comfort. The comfort layers consist of two poly foam layers of 1.7 PCF and 1.5 PCF. The mattress is topped with a memory foam layer of 3.1 PCF which contains gel capsules that don’t get warm quickly and thus regulate the temperature during the night.

Size

The IKEA Holmsbu mattress, just like the Hjellestad mattress, comes in three sizes which are full, king and queen size. Twin size of this mattress is not available. The mattress is 45 cm thick, making it the thickest mattress among all IKEA spring, foam and latex mattresses.

The Holmsbu spring mattress weighs 61 kg which makes it a struggle to get it in your home and place it in the right spot. Transportation is not much easier either, since the mattress does not come roll packed.

The full size Holmsbu mattress contains 616 mini pocket springs, 475 mini pocket springs under the first layer, and 475 pocket springs at the bottom. The number of the springs depends on the size of the mattress you choose.

Materials

Besides steel spring coils, polyurethane foam and memory foam, the IKEA Holmsbu spring mattress consists of combinations of cotton and polyester (ticking). The wadding inside the mattress consists of Polyester / viscose fibers. The lining is made of non-woven polypropylene, as usual for all IKEA mattresses.

The handle consists of 64% polyester and 36% cotton, polyester / viscose fiber and non-woven polypropylene while the cover is of similar material combination, consisting of non-woven propylene, 64% polyester, 36% cotton an polyamide. The zipper is made of 100% polyamide.

The cover of the mattress is removable and thus can and should be washed in the washing machine. However, you should not tumble dry it, dry clean it, bleach it or iron it. An extra protective cover also comes with the IKEA Holmsbu mattress. It has durable handles that make the moving process easier. Once the mattress is in place, all you have to do is unzip the protective cover and take it off.

How it feels

The combination of three spring layers and three foam layers makes for a very thick and comfortable, medium firm mattress that comes in white color. The spring layers provide support while the foam ones add comfort. The memory foam layer on top molds to the shape of your body and is highly resilient. Such structure improves your blood circulation and helps you relax during your sleep.

The memory foam also contains gel capsules which keep the temperature of the mattress even during the night. Meaning, the mattress wont get too warm nor too cold, providing you a comfortable surface for sleeping.

The pocket springs in the supportive layers are individually wrapped which allows them to move freely without affecting the other side of the mattress. Therefore, your movements will be well insulated and you wont disturb your partner anymore during your sleep.

The combination of comfort and support is outstanding when it comes to the IKEA Holmsbu spring mattress. According to customers’ reviews, people are satisfied with how well this mattress performs and how it feels to sleep on it every night. Some have even stated that their back pain has gone ever since they started using the IKEA Holmsbu spring mattress.

However, there have been complaints about the durability of the mattress in general. Some customers stated that over a year long period of use, the sides of the mattress started sinking which could feel very uncomfortable. Therefore, if you’re looking for a mattress that will last for years and years, Holmsbu might just not be the right choice.

On the other hand, if you’re ready to pay the price of replacing it over a longer period of time, you can enjoy its comfort and all the benefits it carries along. The mattress is designed to be used on one side only so turning it over once it wears out is not an option. While temperature regulation and motion transfer are a plus for the Holmsbu spring mattress, there is the negative side of off-gassing.

A strong chemical odor will be present during the first couple weeks of using the product. Airing the mattress out every day will help speed up the off-gassing problem significantly. However, this flaw should not be taken into consideration too much since every mattress you purchase will be off-gassing for the first few weeks.

Pricing, shipping and other details

As mentioned in the beginning of our review, IKEA offers a new lower price for the Holmsbu spring mattress. As you can tell, the price is lower for each mattress size, making a great opportunity for folks who want to get a high quality, comfortable mattress without breaking the bank. Even though IKEA’s mattresses are already affordable enough, an additional discount is a great chance that you shouldn’t miss out on.

When it comes to shipping, there is a problem with the packaging of the mattress. It does not come roll packed as most IKEA mattresses do and since it weighs 61 kg you can imagine how difficult it is to move it around your home. If you were hoping to save money by transporting the mattress yourself, in a car, you should know that it wont be an easy task to complete, unless you have a van and a helping hand.

Opting for IKEA’s shipping service is always a good idea, if you’re willing to pay a few extra bucks to save yourself the struggle. You may be familiar with IKEA’s warranty and trial period policies but if you’re not, the warranty that comes with the mattress lasts 25 years and covers only the manufacturing defaults on the product.

IKEA generously lets you try out the mattress for one year and if, during that period, you find that mattress unfit for any reason, you can exchange it for any brand new mattress in the store. However, to be able to do so your mattress must be clean and undamaged.
