💡 Measurement & Fit Tips
📏 How to Measure Correctly: Use a soft measuring tape. Start at the center of the horse's chest, run along the side of the body, and end at the center of the tail base. Do NOT measure over the back. This is your blanket size in inches.
⚖ Between Sizes? Always Round Up: If your horse measures 71", order a 72" blanket. Horse blankets are sized in 2-inch increments. A blanket that is too small causes shoulder restriction and rubbing, while a slightly larger size is always safer and more comfortable.
🦴 Draft & Wide Breeds Need Special Fit: Draft horses and wide-bodied breeds often need a blanket with extra width (barrel room) even if the length measurement falls in the standard horse range. Look for blankets specifically marked "Draft Fit" or "Plus" sizing.
💧 Layering for Warmth: For very cold weather, layer a medium turnout over a stable sheet rather than buying the heaviest fill. This gives flexibility across weather changes. When layering, allow for one size up in the outer blanket to accommodate the inner layer comfortably.

Choosing the right size for a Horse Blanket is really important. If the Horse Blanket is too big or too small, it can cause problems. When it is too big, the horse risks tripping and sliding under it.

When it is too small it can rub the skin and limit the movement. So always measure instead of guess.

How to Choose the Right Size Horse Blanket

To find the size of a Horse Blanket for a horse, use a flexible tape. Start at the center of the chest, pull it along the body until the back end. That length in inches is the Horse Blanket size.

A helper is useful, because the tape must stay flat and tight. For small horses, the method stays same. From the chest center to the back end.

Most Horse Blankets come in steps of three inches, for example 72, 75 or 78 inches. When the horse’s measure falls bewteen two sizes, it is better to choose the bigger one. For example, for 73 inches a 74-inch Horse Blanket would work.

If it reaches 77 and a half, choose 78 inches. Those two extra inches are usually helpful, because the Horse Blanket then covers a bit more down and gives more protection against bad weather.

The height of a horse does not affect the Horse Blanket size much. It depends more on the body shape of the animal. A horse with a long back, strong build or extra wait requires a different size than a tall but slim horse.

A 13.2-hand pony could use a 69 or 70-inch Horse Blanket. A 14.3-hand stocky horse would work with 72 inches. On the other hand, a 16.1-hand Percheron weighing 1,600 pounds could need 88 inches.

Most horses fall between 74 and 80 inches, but always measure to be sure.

Some Horse Blankets are a bit smaller than listed. If a Horse Blanket matches exactly with the size, adding two inches always works well for most horses. For really big horses, four extra inches can be helpful.

Some brands offer special cuts. Horses with deep shoulders and wide bodies usually need an XL-cut, which is 20 percent deeper in the neck and sides. Horses with low heels benefit from Horse Blankets with a closed front and deep V-shape at the base.

Horse Blanket sizes can also appear in centimeters for European makers or in feet and inches for Australian ones. Converting is easy… 72 inches match six feet zero inches or 183 centimeters.

When the Horse Blanket arrives, right away try it on the horse. The front closure must line up with the shoulder point. The fit really matters to avoid rubbing andsliding.

Every horse is unique, so general sizes serve only as a guideline.
