Drapery rings are the most popular way to finish drapery installations, although they are not required for every type of curtain panel. Adding colorful or metal rings gives curtains an elegant look instead of simply hanging them on the rod. Thanks to rings, the hardware stays visible rather than hidden behind pockets or back tabs.
The most common rings for drapes are full-circle rings with a small metal loop at the bottom, called an eye or eyelet. They are used with drapery pins, which have a sharp end that gets inserted into the top hem or pleat of the drapery. Some rings do not clip on at all.
How to Choose and Use Curtain Rings
Instead, a drapery hook is threaded through the small eyelet and the curtains hang from that hook.
Clip-on drapery rings are faster and easier to use. They just clip onto the top of the curtains and slide over a decorative curtain rod. No sewing needed.
Drapery rings and clips come in various colors to match any decor. High quality iron drapery rings with eyelets are available in four finishes and are made from solid iron.
IKEA sells the SYRLIG curtain ring with clip and hook in black, white, brass color and nickel plated options. These rings slide easily on the curtain rod and the choice to attach them with clips or hooks is all included. To be able to pull the curtain easily, the ring diameter should be larger than the curtain rod diamiter.
The max load for these rings is seven pounds. They can be wiped clean with a dry cloth.
There is no set rule on what size drapery rings need to be, but thinking about scale and proportion is always a good idea. Curtains will end up being slightly longer when attached by hooks and rings than if they were hung by the rod pocket or back tabs. That is worth keeping in mind when measuring.
Rings work great for getting a more tailored look. Removing tabs and adding little rings makes a big difference. For a no-sew pleated curtain idea, just use curtain rings or iron-on pleat tape to create elegant pleated curtains from tablecloths.
Spray painting the curtain rod and rings gold can create accessories that match seemingly high-end drapes. It is also totally fine to mix hardware colors. The rod and brackets can be one color while the rings and finials are another.
One thing to watch out for with long curtains is that c-rings can get caught on each other and become jumbled. Some curtain rings have beads on the surface to reduce friction, which helps them glide better. Tacking the last ring inplace can also keep drapes from sliding too far when drawn open.
