Choosing the right size for a dining table, you can change the whole feel in the dining room. A small table works for everyday meals, making them fun and circulation easy. Understanding how table size relates to seating helps, a dining table size chart will serve as a starting point
Standard height of a dining table is between 71 and 76 cm, which is comfortable for most folks. That counts for round tables too. Right dimensions of the table and chair heights improve the whole dining experience, whether you choose for 6 or for 8 people.
How to Choose the Right Dining Table Size
A small table 91 to 112 cm or 122 cm long sits one person per side. A table 259 to 274 cm long can fit three or four chairs on the sides, depending on the size and style of the dining chairs. For six people a table around 2,1 m long and 0,9 m wide works.
For eight people an ideal rectangular table is around 2,1 m long, or round with a diamter of 1,8 m.
For a round table for six people, dimensions usually go from 122 to 152 cm. To seat six at a round table, it needs at least 137 cm diameter. Distance between table legs decides how many chairs fit.
A round table is less helpful, because it does not agree with different seat types and has less surface than a rectangular one.
For 6-seater standard proportions are about 1800 x 900 mm, but a square 1600 x 1000 mm also works. Average width of a dining chair is around 48 cm. For comfortable family dining, a table for 6 to 8 people is best.
Numbers give a start, but look past calculations to find the best size.
Clearance around the table really matters. At least 91 cm around it is standard, but 107 to 122 cm is better for everyday use. That extra room makes it easier to pull out chairs and walk behind eaters.
At a minimum, leave 61 cm past the table for chairs. Between the table edge and wall leave at least 76 cm, but more is better.
Here is a good trick: take blue painters tape, mark the table size on the floor, and live with it before you decide. If the dining room measures 3,7 x 3 m, remove 91 cm from all sides, you stay with a practical space of 1,8 x 1,2 m for the table.
Expandable tables are also called extendable, extension, drop-leaf, butterfly or simply tables with leaves. They give flexibility, creating the right surface for the chairs needed. A drop-leaf gate-legged table folds to 2 chairs or expands to 12, 14.
A table does not need to be huge… Simply fill the rest of the space with sideboards, plants and art.
