Many folks do not realize how heavy curtains genuinely are The weight determines how they fall, the rod you will need and whether they will stay put after you hang them. Whether curtains are heavy or light depends entirely on the fabric. Blackout curtains are a good sample.
Some are thick and massive, while others feel almost light. Lightweight clothes work best for little windows, kitchens or any place where you want a tender look. You will find such from voile, gauze or lightweight cotton mix.
Curtain Weight and Choosing the Right Rod
On the other hand, we have the heavy variants. Some curtains are so thick, that they perfectly block the sunshine. Others find a nice balance, they weigh enough to keep their form fine, yet let a bit of light throuhg.
A funny thing is, that even lightweight fabric can look elegant and hang well if it is dense, without loading your rod.
Even so, curtain rods are not unbreakable. The strongest rods can bear between 20 and 50 pounds, although that ranges. A thick rod could bear around 22 pounds, while a slimmer one reaches 11.
When the weight is evenly distributed, every bracket usually bears around 6.6 pounds. Here is the problematic part. A slim rod certainly bends if you hang too heavy curtains.
For blackout panels, a diameter of around 1 1/8 inches gives the necessary firmness. Also the installation is important; if you set it in the wall, the capacity of the rod becomes the main restriction.
Curtain weights settle a common problem, those panels that curve out at the edges. These cloth-rolled weights are hand-stitched at the bottom edge to give a clean, finished look. Every weight is approximately 0.4 ounces.
Only laying those weights at the bottom of every seam and corner, you will receive a polished result. For more lightweight clothes as voile, heavy tape is more efficient. Good news, now there are many choices without lead, so you will not have weird things in your curtains.
Outdoor curtains change the rules. They require heavy bottom anchors, since wind would turn them into flapping cloths. Sandbags of around 3 pounds each operate quite well.
Theater curtains have a heavy chain sewn directly in the edge. A chain in a pocket at the bottom edge keeps everything stable and straight. Another method is sewing a pocket and putting a wooden stick or metal tube inside, occasionally lightweight solutions simply do not work for outdoor conditions.
Even paperclips can help in an urgent situation. They are flexible, so the weight falls directly in the edge with only one barb visible on the inside.
Online calculators now allow you to enter the width and length of the curtain to count the total weight, which is very helpful when you choose the right rod.
