Ideal Seat Gap
💡 Comfort Tip: The ideal gap between the seat top and the counter surface is 9–13 inches. This provides comfortable knee clearance and a natural elbow height for most adults. For taller individuals, aim closer to 13 inches.
💡 Footrest Tip: A footrest placed 10–12 inches above the floor (for a 36-inch counter stool) reduces leg fatigue significantly. If your stool has no footrest, a floor rail or cross-bar at counter base can serve the same purpose.

Choosing the right height for a stool can make or break the whole setup. Not only about comfort, although that matters a lot, but also about the whole look and feeling of the space. The height you choose affects the room for legs, the beauty and the use of your seating space.

So before you buy anything that looks nice online understand how the stool fits with your counter or bar

How to Pick the Right Stool Height

There are three main categories that cover almost all cases. Table height is usually around 29 to 30 inches from the floor. Counter height is in the 36-inch range.

Bar height goes up to 39… 42 inches. Each of those requires its own stool size so that it looks and feels corectly.

Most people use stools for counter height. They normally have 23 to 26 inches for the seat. Because kitchen islands and counters stand at standard 36 inches, such stools work well for everyday meals, cooking or even working at a computer.

A 36-inch counter fits well with a stool of 24, 26 inches, that is the best spot according to my experience.

Bar stools are the higher relatives. They measure 28 to 32 inches from the floor. If your bar surfaces reach 39, 42 inches, choose a stool in 28, 30 inches.

A normal 42-inch bar works best with stools of 29 or 30 inches.

Also there is the extra-high group. Those stools have 33 to 36 inches seat height and work for surfaces of 44. 48 inches. Some special kitchens have counters that high, and finding right stools can be hard.

For such a setup you commonly need custom pieces.

Here is the simple way to measure. Leave 10, 12 inches between the person and the bottom of the counter or table. Measure the height of your counter, subtract 10; 12 inches, and here you have the target for the stool.

One important thing: the whole height of a bar stool measures from the floor to the top of the backrest, not the seat. When buying, mind especially the seat height. Also leave 6, 10 inches between the stools, so that people can move the knees freely without hitting elbows.

Footrests make sitting more comfortable. For odd counter heights or different sized family members, adjustable stools save theday.
