💡Measurement Tips
“People come in here thinking they’re going to do a vertical highway, and they leave with a ladder. It’s because when you stand on the floor it just seems so obvious how far apart things should be, until you go to put the first bracket there. Then you see the space on the wall and choose a location for the next shelf. Your cat looks through this huge gap, which is terrifying to him but looks like a reasonable distance to you. Whether or not he uses this route every day versus never using it has nothing to do with personality; it has everything to do with confidence and physics.”
It’s all about the vertical rise (the primary variable). Cats measure effort in vertical distance rather then horizontal width. A 20 inch side leap require far less effort than a 20 inch vertical jump.
How to Plan Your Cat Wall Shelves
With this in mind, the calculator above does the math when you input your wall height and desired challenge level. Just click on Easy if you want a gentle climb, Standard for something close to normal bedroom route, or Athletic for really tall, sure-footed jumpers. From there, it sets an approximate range for appropriate height for next shelf.
Setting things to Easy will hold the rise below 14 inches, creating a climb that’s safe for both a young kitten or senior cat without putting extra strain on any limb (and also helping them get used to the idea). The Athletic setting pushes that number closer to 24 inches, suitable for younger cats, though with minimal leeway for mishaps. So long as the rise is right, horizontal spacing is less important. With enough length to reach solid footing, cats bridge distances admirably well.
Many DIY projects go wrong because of depth of the ledge. Twelve inches offers enough security to enable a U-turn with no sensation of teetering atop a tight rope. Ten inches are the minimum; any less and even perfect vertical spacing won’t be enough, because there isn’t enough footing to launch from safly.
Width is another factor. Sixteen inches is common, but wider shelves on critical locations such as final landings and anywhere requiring a sharp turn create much-needed buffer zones. How wide does your wall have to be? It depends on what route pattern you choose. Straight up-and-down is most efficient, though in actual rooms this work only some of the time. Switchbacks and zigzags take more space horizontally between center of the shelves; the cat has to find room to approach from an angle and dismount again. Turning corners is tricky because it breaks the momentum. To make calculations, the tool takes into account not just width of the wall itself, but also additional space required wherever there’s a change of direction. If a zigzag fails the fit check with a warning flag, then no matter how many shelves you add, that particular zigzag intensity won’t work within your given wall width.
Extra thought needs to be given to your starting and end points. The first jump has to be doable and sets tone for all those to come. Don’t make it too high if you don’t think the cat will try it again. Likewise, the end point need to provide an obvious path out of the situation. Whether it’s a cat tree, a window ledge, or just a way back down to the ground. There should be no dead ends where the cat is trapped at the top of the wall.
It’s okay to mix jump levels in one route. A good example would of starting with shorter, easier jumps to get the kitty comfortable, then making the jumps higher as it climbs. It varies things, copying more of how he/she would naturaly climb. Just make sure you don’t have a jarring difference from athletic to easy jumps. A change in distance will make him/her hesitate.
In conclusion: A wall shelf route isn’t just about hole-drilling; it’s about creating a playground for your cat that honors his/her physical limitations while catering to their psychological comfort. Get the spacing correct and the shelves becomes invisible, replaced by the thrill of climbing. You end up with a wall that feels as much a part of your house as it does a structure built onto it, one that invites your cat to go higher as easily as he/she would on the floor.
