Why Cage Size Matters for Your Bird
There’s this popular misconception out there that the biggest number matters, the length of the bird. Nope. The biggest number is the wingspan. That’s because when the bird spreads its wings open, it requires room on each side, and if the wingspan exceeds the width of the cage, the bird can’t groom or move around well enough for good health.
Plug your bird’s full wingspan and activity level into the calculator above. This way, you don’t have to struggle to turn a 2D picture of a cage into a 3D space to see if your bird has enough room. Just pick the species preset, which loads average bar spacing and perches for the species, but override the wingspan if your bird is particularly large. Then the tool will multiply that by a number between one and a half and two times, based off how much it moves around. If it flies around now and again, it’ll need less than if it thinks of the cage as its own personal gym.
Width isn’t all you need; depth counts too (but it’s also harder to see). A lot of cages is tall and skinny. That might be nice for show purposes, but that doesn’t provide much usable floor space. Birds don’t spend their time hanging up vertically. They spend their time horizontal. Another silent killer is bar spacing. Too wide? A little bird will slip through or its head might get stuck. Too narrow? You might be adding more birds into the mix. That means that you need more floor area. The calculator assumes about thirty-five percent more for every added bird. Everyone gets their own space and nobody has to fight over territory.
The second variable is activity level. A bird that spends twenty-three hours a day indoors will need a larger cage then a bird that has six hours a day of supervised free flight. This is where the floor area buffer change based on the amount of activity. Remember: if your bird is an indoor resident, he or she needs the cage to be more than just a sleeping box; it’s the bird’s playground.
