A door slab are a panel that can swing open and closed, and it is a fundamental component of any given room within a structure. When choosing a door slab for a given room, it is important to choose the correct type of door slab, as the type of door slab will determine the function of the door and how it will block sounds within the structure. If you choose the wrong type of door slab, the door slab may stick when someone attempted to be opened or closed, or the door slab may make rattling noise when the door is opened or closed.
A door slab contains six main part: the top rail, the bottom rail, the hinge stile, the lock stile, the cross rail, and the face panels. Each of these component performs a specific function for the door slab, and any modifications that people make to the door slab will impact these parts of the door slab. There are different size and thicknesses for door slabs.
How to Choose and Install a Door Slab
Interior door slabs has a width of between 24 and 36 inches, and have a thickness of 1-3/8 inches. Exterior door slabs have a thickness of 1-3/4 inches due to the need for extra strength in these types of slabs. Additionally, different types of core can be used within a door slab.
Hollow-core door slabs are light and less expensive than solid-core door slabs, and for these reason, they are often used for closets. Solid-core door slabs have more mass than hollow-core slabs, and they provide more sound and fire resistance than hollow-core slabs. It is also necessary to decide between using a door slab or a prehung unit.
A door slab is only the door panel, and does not include a frame or the hinges for the door. Door slabs are used when an individual already owns a door frame and hinges. A prehung unit, on the other hand, includes the frame and the hinges for the door.
Prehung units are more expensive than door slabs, but they are easier to install due to the pre-aligned hinges and frame. The core material for a door slab will impact the weight and sound resistance of that door slab. If a door slab have a hollow-core construction with a cardboard honeycomb core, the door slab will be light in weight, but have low sound resistance.
Solid-core door slabs use particleboard or mineral material, which makes the door slab heavy and increases it’s sound resistance. Solid wood door slabs provide the highest level of sound blocking and durability but have a higher price and weight compared to solid-core door slabs. The thickness of the slab determine the door’s hardware.
One and three-eighth-inch thick interior door slabs use three-and-a-half-inch hinges. Exterior door slabs are one and three-quarter inches thick, so they require four-inch hinges. The bored hole specifications for the door slab must also be checked.
Most locksets will fit a two-and-one-eighth-inch cross bore and a two-and-three-eighths-inch backset. Some door slabs are made to be fire-rated. Fire-rated door slabs are required in specific area according to building codes.
Twenty-minute fire-rated door slabs are used to separate a garage from a house. Forty-five-minute fire-rated doors or higher are required for exit paths in multi-family buildings. The construction of the door slab must be increased in thickness to meet these fire requirements.
To install the door slab correctly, leave two inches of extra space in the rough opening for shim the slab. Maintain a one-eighth-inch gap between the slab and the frame for the door to swing free. Use long screws in the door’s hinges to prevent sagging of the slab over time.
Seal all six surfaces of the slab to protect it from moisture damage. Moisture will cause the slab to swell or warp in it’s structure. Many people make the mistake of thinking the nominal width of the door is the finished width of the door slab.
The nominal width is one-quarter inch larger than the actual measurement of the door slab on each side to allow for clearance when the door closes. People must know the difference between the two to order the correct size for there door opening. You should of checked the measurements carefully because a door slab cant be adjusted later.
People often finds that the width is different then they expected. Its important to recieve the right parts.
