There are a few methods to edit these elements so that your coffee table does not appear as if it is attempting to collect all of your ocean-related souvenir. Once you are knowledgeable about these individual elements and how they may or may not react to other elements on your coffee table, the possibility of achieving an appealing arrangement will become apparent to you.
Beautiful Ways to Decorate Your Coastal Coffee Table
1. Driftwood
Start with textures that are associated with nature. One of the elements that you can incorporate into your coffee table is driftwood. Driftwood is one of the element that typically comes in the amount of one piece and is a length of fifteen inches or more, with interesting curves that help to display the natural characteristic of the wood.
You can place this driftwood onto a linen runner first, which will prevent the wood from leaving mark upon your coffee table. The colors of the driftwood tend to be somewhat natural and to inherently lower the visual temperature of the décor in your room.
2. Sea Glass
Sea glass can be layered onto the driftwood. Sea glass pieces will be of soft blue and greens in color, with the potential for a few pieces that are of cobalt blue. You can either collect these pieces yourself from the beach or purchase them in small quantity from suppliers of beachcomber items. Place the sea glass onto the driftwood in a few places rather than scattering the sea glass items in a circle around your coffee table.
Limit yourself to no more than twenty piece of sea glass. Adding more than twenty pieces of sea glass to your coffee table could potentially make your arrangement look as if it was created in a craft store instead of a living room décor arrangement. Candles can be incorporated into your coffee table with a specific purpose.
3. Pillar Candles
Use pillar candles that are of a matte white or pale sand color, and place these within clear glass hurricane. Place two candles of different height off to one side of the coffee table. The placement of the candles to one side will help to ensure that they do not compete with the visual interest of the driftwood.
4. Hardcover Books
Hardcover books can be incorporated into the décor of your coffee table. The books can have titles regarding maritime history, shells on the beach, or stories regarding classic sailing vessel. The books can be of a height of three maximum, and you can rotate the top book so that it display a photograph of either a stormy coast or a vintage map of a portion of the ocean.
The books will help to ground the rest of the décor on your coffee table. Now for the shells. Use one or two type of striking shells rather than using dozens of small shells.
5. Striking Shells
A few options of shells include a large knobbed whelk or a sand dollar. These shells can be placed against one of the holder for the candles. Should you choose to use small shells, use only three or four variety of shells.
Place them within the curve of the driftwood. Avoid using tiny shells of the same variety all around the coffee table; nature does not create these décor items and your coffee table should not attempt to be tidy. Use metallic items to represent the sparkle of sunlight onto the ocean’s surface.
6. Metallic Items
Items such as brass coasters or a copper dish can be incorporated into the décor. These metals will contrast to the colors of the books and sea glass, but will not fight for attention with the other décor element on the coffee table. These metallic items can be used to display pieces of beach agate, or they can be used to catch any key or sunglasses that you may have acquired on your walk to the beach.
7. Coastal Plants
Plants add a sense of energy to the décor that static item cannot achieve on their own. A plant such as sea thrift or a snake plant that you have placed into a ceramic vessel will help to mimic the types of vegetation that are found on the coast. The color of the plant should be gray-green in color so as to allow it to reflect the color of your driftwood.
The plant should be placed into a vessel that is of a textured matte material such as oatmeal or slate in color. Avoid using ceramics that appear glossily. Water the plant sparingly, allowing the plant to experience a bit of drought stress.
This look at the plant will help your décor to appear authentic rather than carefully stage. Now you can vary the heights of the items. By using tall candle, medium-sized books, low driftwood, and a few tiny shells, you can mimic the various elevation of the land features that are associated with the coast.
8. Varying Heights
For instance, dunes may be of a height in the middle, and tidal pools may be of a height of a few inches above the ground. Items of equal height to one another can become visually boring for the individual who is observing the décor. Use an acrylic riser to raise one of the items such the books so that they are of a different height from the rest of the items.
This riser will remain invisible to the viewer of your décor when you place books upon it. Avoid adding items of a specific theme to your coffee table such as lighthouses or plastic anchor. These items go against the décor of a coastal living space.
Ensure that the items that you choose for your coffee table are either sourced from the beach itself or items that appear to mimic the beach décor as closely as possible. Test each item to ensure that it would be located on the coast in its specific form. Should the answer to this question be no, then remove that object from your décor selection.
Ensure that there are contrast in textures to the items that are placed upon the coffee table. Items such as sea glass that are smooth in texture can be combined with natural wood textures as well as linen textures. These items will engage the viewers sense of touch even if they do not physically interact with the coffee table décor.
Individuals may unknowingly run their finger over the items that you have selected. Update your décor as the season change. During the winter, for instance, you may choose to replace the sea glass with sea pinecones that have been dusted with salt.
A throw blanket in color of oatmeal can be added. During the summer, you may choose to change the color of the décor to bright blues. A starfish may also be added to the décor if it is of a bleached color due to exposure to the sun’s rays.
While the basic décor items such as driftwood, books, and candles will remain the same throughout the year, the items that are added may be rotated. This will ensure that your décor does not become as common as wallpaper in your living area and will provide you with an opportunity to rotate your collection of beach treasure. One of the last elements that you can include in your coffee table décor is the use of negative space.
9. Negative Space
This element can be used to leave space for a glass of iced tea, space for a pair of reading glasses, or better yet, to simply allow space for your pleasure in having an uncluttered coffee table. Adding too many item defeats the purpose of creating such an atmosphere for your living area. Stand back from your coffee table once you have finished adding each of these elements.
Remove one of the items. You may be surprised at the improvement in the way that your décor look with one of the items removed. Your coffee table décor will evoke memories of the ocean in your living area.
Each of the elements that you have selected will work together to bring the ocean into your living area in a way that is subtle rather than overwhelming. Your living area will have a sense of calm that typically fills the air when individual are near an ocean. Even if the nearest ocean is hundreds of miles from your home, your décor will work to bring some of that calm into your living area.
Your living area will remain calm and peaceful and will not appear to attempt to highlight the fact that it is coastal decorated. The best example of coffee table décor that emulates coastal living areas will simply whisper to the individuals that pass that it is of a coastal nature.
