Weight of MDF Calculator
Estimate MDF panel weight from dimensions, thickness, grade density, sheet count, moisture, routed openings, laminate or paint layers, and your handling limit.
Choose a common MDF part, then adjust the dimensions, density grade, coating, cutout area, and handling limit for your build.
| Nominal thickness | Volume | Standard MDF | High density MDF |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4 in | 0.667 ft³ | 32 lb | 40 lb |
| 1/2 in | 1.333 ft³ | 64 lb | 80 lb |
| 5/8 in | 1.667 ft³ | 80 lb | 100 lb |
| 3/4 in | 2.000 ft³ | 96 lb | 120 lb |
| 1 in | 2.667 ft³ | 128 lb | 160 lb |
| Part | Typical size | Thickness | Approx weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cabinet door slab | 24 x 30 in | 1/2 in | 8 lb |
| Closet shelf | 12 x 36 in | 3/4 in | 9 lb |
| Speaker baffle | 18 x 24 in | 3/4 in | 11 lb |
| Wardrobe side | 24 x 80 in | 3/4 in | 40 lb |
| Painted desktop core | 30 x 60 in | 3/4 in | 38 lb |
| Added layer | Allowance | Best used for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primer one face | 0.03 lb/sq ft | Door fronts | Light seal coat allowance |
| Paint both faces | 0.08 lb/sq ft | Finished panels | Primer plus finish coats |
| Thin veneer both faces | 0.16 lb/sq ft | Furniture panels | Includes two light face sheets |
| Plastic laminate both faces | 0.70 lb/sq ft | Desktops | Heaviest common face option |
| Category | Limit use | Planning meaning | Typical action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy carry | Up to 60% | Below the entered person limit | Normal shop handling |
| Careful carry | 60% to 100% | Near the selected limit | Use a clear path |
| Two-person lift | 100% to 180% | Above solo preference | Plan a helper or cart |
| Mechanical assist | Over 180% | Too heavy for casual carrying | Use lift aids or break down |
48 lb/ft³ is a useful default for furniture parts, closet shelves, and painted panels.
Full 3/4 sheets are heavy enough that many shops treat them as two-person panels.
35 lb/ft³ trims load without changing the dimension math.
It can make tall door fronts and wall panels easier to move and align.
52 lb/ft³ is a practical estimate for denser green-core sheets.
Add a moisture factor if the panels were stored in a humid garage or delivery stack.
60 lb/ft³ suits speaker baffles, templates, jigs, and hard-wearing parts.
Small panels may feel dense even when their dimensions look manageable.
Measure cutouts as real area. Large speaker holes, handle routes, and sink openings should be subtracted once per panel before coatings are added.
Use the handling limit as a planning tool. Stairs, tall panels, and vehicle loading can need a lower practical limit than a flat shop-floor carry.
MDF have a specific weight. To complete you’re project correctly, you need to know the weight of the MDF panels you will use. The weight of the MDF will determine if one person can carry it.
Furthermore, the weight will tell you if the shelf bracket will be strong enough to hold the weight of the MDF panels. You can all try to guess the weight of MDF, but the guesses will likely be incorrect. Using incorrect guesses for the weight of the MDF will cause problem when you are moving the MDF on the stairs or if you are working alone with the MDF.
