When you choose a wreath to place on a door, there is a few things to consider about the scale of the wreath in relation to the door. A wreath may look large in a photograph, but when placed on a large door, it may look small. The visual size of a wreath is relative to the size of the door on which the wreath is to be placed.
A wreath that is too small for the door will make the doorway appear empty, while a wreath that is too large will overwhelm the doorway. It is important, therefore, to ensure that the wreath and door has balanced proportions to one another. The size of the door will dictate the diameter of the wreath that should be purchased.
How to Choose the Right Wreath Size for Your Door
For standard single doors, you should choose a wreath of an appropriate diameter that still leaves some empty space around the edges of the wreath. For double doors, however, you should purchase a larger wreath so that the large surface area of the double doors is matched by the large wreath. Using a small wreath on a double door will make it appear as if the wreath is swallow by the doors.
For interior doors or for windows, however, a smaller wreath are appropriate. This is due to the fact that the wreath should not become an obstacle in a narrow doorway. The materials from which a wreath is to be made will also affect the way in which the wreath appear to be large.
For instance, a wreath made of a thin wire frame will allow for the addition of other decorative elements (floral picks, ribbons, etc.) that will increase the diameter of the wreath. Therefore, if creating the wreath oneself, the base of the wreath should not be the final size of the wreath. Instead, the wreath base can be smaller than desired, but the addition of floral picks will inevitablly increase the diameter of the wreath.
In addition to the materials that can affect the size of the wreath, seasonal changes also play a role in the size of the wreath. For instance, spring and summer wreaths may contain light florals and greenery. Because the wreaths contain fewer greenery than in the winter season, their diameter can be smaller.
In the winter, however, wreaths may be made of evergreen plants like pine or fir that is very dense in their structure. The diameter of a winter wreath must be large to allow for these dense plants to be include in the wreath. Additionally, because greenery in the winter is very heavy and thick, a large wreath diameter is necessary for inclusion of these plants.
Once you have chosen the appropriate wreath, you must hang it appropriately to the door. If the wreath is heavy (due to the type of greenery used in its creation), a heavy hook will be necessary to avoid having the wreath slide down the door. Furthermore, the wreath should be hung so that it is even with an observers eye to act as a point of interest in the room.
For interior doors, however, you can hang the wreath with an adhesive strip or ribbon to avoid damage the door. Overall, though, the size of the wreath that is hung on the door should be matched to the size of that door to ensure that the two element appear balanced and proportional to one another.
