When installing a chandelier, you need to determine the correct height for teh chandelier. The height of the chandelier is important because the height of the chandelier will determine how the chandelier function within the room. If the chandelier is too high, it may appear disconnected from the furnitures in the room.
If the chandelier is too low, individuals may bump into the chandelier, or the chandelier may appear to be in the way of individuals in the room. Therefore, it is important to measure the height of the chandelier to ensure the fixture will help to provide light to the room without becoming an obstruction to movement within that room. The purpose of the room will help to determine the appropriate height for the chandelier in that room.
How to Hang a Chandelier at the Right Height
For instance, in a room with a dining table, you should hang the chandelier to provide light to the dining table, yet not create glare upon the individual who are seated at the table. In a living room or an entryway, the height of the chandelier should be hung such that the bottom of the chandelier is at least seven feet from the floor within the rooms walkways. A clearance of seven feet from the floor to the bottom of the chandelier will ensure that individuals do not hit there heads upon the chandelier.
In a stairwell, the lowest point of the chandelier should be hung such that it clears the highest step within the stairwell. Another main consideration in hanging a chandelier is the height of the ceiling within the room. For instance, in rooms with eight-foot ceilings, the chandelier may be hung closer to the ceiling.
In rooms with ten-foot or twelve-foot ceilings, though, the chandelier may hang lower from the ceiling. A common recommendation is for chandeliers to have a two and a half to three inch drop for every foot of ceiling height in the room. By establishing this relationship between the ceiling height and the chandelier height, the chandelier will be proportional to the ceiling, and will not appear to be too small or too larger than the space in the ceiling.
Depending upon the use of the room, there is some differences in the height considerations for chandeliers. For instance, in kitchens, the chandeliers or pendant light should be hung at a height that allows individuals to extend their arms while they are performing tasks at the kitchen counter. In bedrooms, however, height is more flexible.
In bedrooms that do not recieve as much use as other areas of the house, individuals do not need to consider the same care regarding the chandelier height. Finally, the style of chandelier may also have an impact upon the height considerations. For instance, if the chandelier contain crystals, it may need to be hung lower to the floor than a linear chandelier.
Many individuals make some mistakes when measuring the appropriate height for their chandelier. For instance, they may forget to account for the height of the dining table when measuring the gap to the chandelier. In this case, individuals should measure from the dining table to the bottom of the chandelier.
Standard dining tables is thirty inches in height. If the height of the chandelier is measured from a different point than the tabletop, the chandelier may hang too low from the ceiling. In addition to the dining table, individuals should ensure that the chandelier is hung to allow for at least seven feet of clearance from the floor within the area that individuals in the room are to use.
Another consideration for chandeliers is the diameter of the chandelier in relation to the size of the room. In small rooms, large diameter chandeliers can appear overwhelming within the room. In large rooms, though, small diameter chandeladores may appear too small.
An easy way to determine the diameter of the chandelier is to measure the perimeter of the room. The diameter of the chandelier should be proportional to the size of the room to allow the chandelier to appear balanced within the area. Finally, the use of the room is one final consideration when hanging a chandelier.
For instance, in rooms that children are to use, the chandelier may be hung higher to allow for head room. In other instances, the use of a dimmer switch that controls the chandelier to alter the intensity of the chandeliers light may change the atmosphere of the room. Additionally, the length of the chain or rod that is used to hang the chandelier will also impact the height of the chandelier from the ceiling.
By measuring the height of the ceiling, the height of the furnishings in the room, and the required clearance from the floor, the individual can ensure that the chandelier will be hung at the correct height for that specific room. They should of checked the measurements twice.
