A tie blanket is an item made up of two layer of fleece fabric that are tied together with knots. Tie blankets dont require the use of sewing to create the items, as fleece fabric will not fray when the edge of the fabric are cut. To create a tie blanket, the individual must place two layers of fleece such that the decorative sides of the fleece are facing outward.
The individual will then need to cut the fleece blankets into strip through both layers of fleece at the same time. Each strip of fleece will then be tied into a knot to secure the two layers of fleece to create the tie blanket. The tie blankets are durable item due to the way in which the knots secure the fleece layers, as the fleece fabric will not become damaged during the process.
How to make a tie blanket
The size of the tie blanket that is to be made is a critical component of its production. The size of the blanket that will be created will depend upon the amount of fleece that is purchased for the project. If the seller purchase fleece that is insufficient for the project, they will end up with a tie blanket that is smaller than they had intended.
To avoid this issue, the seller can use a size chart to determine the amount of fleece that will be needed according to the purpose for which the blanket will be used. Small tie blankets can be used to fill cribs or for infants, medium size blanket can be used while sitting on the lap or on the couch, and large blankets can be used for adults or for bedtime use on a bed. However, the larger the blanket that is selected, the more fleece will be required to create the blanket.
In determining the size of a tie blanket that will be cut from the fleece, the seller should add eight inches to the length of the blanket that is desired to allow for the production of fringe along the ends of the blanket. The fringe that will be produced along the ends of the tie blanket can be of different width. The width of the fringe that is cut will impact the amount of time that is required to tie the ends of the blanket.
If the strips that are cut from the fleece are one-inch in width, then there will be a greater number of knot that are created along the blanket, and these one-inch strips will create a more delicately blanket. If the strips of fleece are of one-and-a-half inches in width, then there will be fewer knot that are created along the blanket. Additionally, one-and-a-half inch strip will allow for the blanket to be completed in less time than if one-inch strips were used.
The depth of the fringe that is created will also impact the blanket size requirements. For instance, four inches in depth for fringe for a standard throw blanket is common. For a large blanket that is to be used for bedtime on a bed, five inches in depth in the fringe is either five or six inches in depth to ensure the proportions of the blanket are maintained.
The knots should be tied firmly to the blanket to avoid them becoming loose on the blanket. However, if the knots are tied too tightly with the fleece, the fleece may bunch together. A number of tool will be required to create a tie blanket.
One of the tools that can assist in cutting the fleece is a rotary cutter. A rotary cutter will allow the individual to cut through both layers of fleece at the same time more quickly than with scissors. However, the rotary cutter will work best if the individual also purchase a self-healing mat on which to place the fleece.
Additionally, a long ruler and fabric chalk will be required to make even markings on the fleece. Even lines will ensure that the fringe that is created will be even on the blanket. Additionally, the corner squares of the fleece blankets will need to be cut out prior to cutting the strips of fleece.
Cutting the corner squares will prevent the corners of the blanket from becoming too bulky. While fleece is the most common fabric used to create tie blankets, some individual opt for using minky blankets instead. Fleece is preferred over minky because fleece is more affordable than minky blankets.
Additionally, fleece is less slippery than minky fabric making it easier to work with when creating tie blankets. However, minky blankets can also be used for the project. Minky blankets are extremely soft but are one-sided so the back of the minky blanket may show through the tie blanket knot.
For these reasons, if the tie blanket is to be long-lasting, anti-pill fleece should be purchased. Anti-pill fleece creates tie blankets that will not become balls of fuzz on the surface of the blanket over time. To maintain a tie blanket, specific instruction need to be followed for both the washing and drying processes of the blanket.
To wash the tie blanket, the blanket should be placed in cold water. The blanket should then be dried on a low heat setting in the laundry. High heat when drying the blanket may lead to the fleece on the blanket shrinking and developing pill on its surface.
This may result in the tie blanket no longer maintaining its original size and texture. Additionally, if either solid and patterned fleece blankets are used in the creation of the tie blanket, the two fabrics should coordinate with each other. Using a solid color and a patterned color that match will result in a tie blanket that has coordinated color for both of its fleece layers.
