Measuring Tip: Always measure your window opening at three points — top, middle, and bottom for width; left, center, and right for height. Use the smallest width measurement for inside mount to ensure proper fit. Round down to the nearest 1/8 inch.
Mount Type Tip: Choose inside mount for a clean, recessed look that shows off your window trim. Choose outside mount to make windows appear larger, block more light, and cover gaps or imperfections in the frame.

Find the right size for window blinds seem simple but it often confuses people more quickly than you think. If the blinds do not fit, it can leave holes for unwanted light or even not be installable. So measure carefully before buying something

Usually, standard windows measure between 24 and 60 inches wide and between 36 and 72 inches long. Because of that, many ready blinds, shades and curtains come in those sizes. For example, common dimensions for mini blinds range from 20 to 72 inches wide and from 24 to 84 inches long.

How to Measure Window Blinds

The main goal of blinds is to block the light, but wrong measured blinds allow the light to leak. That is why precise measurement is so important. Measure the width of the window at the top, the middle and the bottom.

Because window openings are never perfectly square, use the smallest measure. For the length, just ensure that the blinds are long enough. Always measure to the nearest 1/8 inch.

If the measure falls on 1/16, round down for the width and up for the height.

If you install the blinds inside, leave about 1/4 inch each side. For instance, if the window measures 45 inches, the blinds should be around 44 and half inches. For outside mounts, use a bit bigger size to stop light from leaking.

The length of the blinds depends on the distance between the window and the floor. Some prefer that the blinds reach the floor, while others want them to cover only the window. That is entirely your own style choice.

A size calculator can help you buy the right product. You only need to enter the width and length in the tool, and it will calculate the precise size. Enter details like the height and the mount type, and let the program do the rest.

Some stores offer services to cut blinds. They can cut and repack the blinds for a small fee. Custom blinds can be ordered to 1/8 inch.

It is good to know that some IKEA blinds can be cut. Some IKEA models have adjustable lengths that go from 63 inches down to 46.5, 28 3/8 or 12 5/8 inches. You can use them in any room, even in wet places like bathrooms.

When you cut blinds yourself, the reduction of the width depends on how close the mechanisms are placed. If you cut more than half inch, it is almost necessary to take half off each side so that everything looks right.
