The typical size of a front door is 36 inches wide and 80 inches tall. This is the most common size for home front doors in United States. Some houses use front doors in 32 or 34 inches wide even so 36 inches stay the favorite option.
In Canada, also 36 inches are the standard width for front doors, while 30, 32 and 34 inches happen commonly based on the age of the house and the style.
Typical Front Door Sizes
Outside doors usually beat the inside ones in size. Standard height for such doors is 80 inches, which matches 6 feet and 8 inches. One finds also 82 inches, around 6 feet 8 inches, which gives a bit of space above the head for tall people.
In modern houses, sometimes one chooses 96-inch doors, so 8 feet high. Outside doors are commonly found in 30- and 32-inch widths.
Front doors range form 2 feet to more than 3 feet wide, and from 6 feet 8 inches to more than 8 feet high. Sizes of front doors go from 30 to 45 inches wide and from 71 to 96 inches tall. The usual thickness of a front door matches 1 and three-quarter inches.
In stores and among contractors, one marks a 36-inch by 80-inch front door as “3/0 x 6/8”. These notations mean 3 feet 0 inches by 6 feet 8 inches. Actually, a 36-inch door really measures 35 and three-quarter inches wide.
For access, outside doors must have at least 36 inches wide, so that one can enter by wheelchair. Many building rules require that front doors reach that 36-inch width. Double-panel front doors or French doors reach 60 to 72 inches wide together.
