Board and batten form a style of wall covering that uses broad vertical boards, called boards, combined by means of thin vertical strips, called battens, that is laid above the gaps. Those battens hide the joints between the bigger boards. Usually one lays wooden batten above the vertical gap between the broad boards what gives stronger and energy-saving surface.
Because it costs little and is simple to combine, one commonly used this style to cover barns and homes.
What Is Board and Batten?
One can reach this look by means of almost every kind of material, for instance wood, fiber-cement or other options. Some products tie strong lines and wooden texture with colour that resists fading and low need of care. Systems from fiber-cement with panels and battens can cost around four dollars each sqaure foot only for the material, and one considers them better than vinyl.
In such systems the distance between battens can range, instead of be set in one alone pattern.
Walls in style board and batten is not simply new fashion. They existed already from around 1830 years. Even so many folks sea them as the freshest trend.
Also inside this style spread. Some call the inside version “trim”, what is not entirely wrong. By definition, board and batten is a classic form of trim that combines different sizes of boards and molding to create textured look.
Real board and batten use vertically laid broad boards, sometimes six to twelve inches broad, with tinier battens up.
For projects inside, battens from MDF can be glued and pinned by means of brad nails directly to drywall for trim. The boards go vertically, so one must have something horizontal to set them. One common method is use 1×3 strips for the vertical boards and 1×4 for the horizontal part.
Some folks lay coat hooks on the horizontal bit to create a practical entryway.
Empty hall one can turn into a working entryway by means of an accent wall in board and batten. Tie it with a form to store shoes and for seating gives the space more harmony and function. Bags, coats and towels can hang from hooks on the batten wall behind the form.
Outside works face their own problems. Boards can clamp and warp sharply after install, especially if they are from soft wood. Local weather rules matter during picking of materials.
When one adds board and batten sections to vinyl siding, the setting must reach the frame of thehouse or solid base, not only the vinyl itself. Sealing of the battens also can be needed depending on conditions. The install instructions of the maker deserve a check for particular tips about the used product.
