Choose the right size for barn door can be hard. The measurement for such sliding door is different to that for regular swinging door. For same opening, sliding barn door requires other size than traditional swinging door.
The door itself is bigger than the covering area of the opening so matter that recall.
How to Choose the Right Size for a Barn Door
Standard barn doors range from 36 to 48 inches in width. Typical widths for single doors are 30, 32, 36 or 42 inches. At double doors, every panel usually has between 24 and 36 inches width.
The heights commonly reach 80, 84 or 96 inches. Many barn door sizes fall between 36 inches wide and 96 inches tall. Very popular are around 36 by 84 inches or 42 by 80 inches, with extra lip for well cover typical openigns.
Some brands offer doors in 84 or 88 inches tall, 1 to 1-3/8 inches thick and at least 36 inches wide. For wooden internal barn doors matching a 3-foot by 7-foot common opening, the thickness usually is 1-3/8 inches. Very large doors commonly have 2-1/4 inches thick or more.
Slim barn doors can be only 3/4 inch thick, occasionally from glass.
For privacy, the extra size is important. 32-inch bathroom opening works better with 40-inch door than with 36-inch. At 24-inch width of opening, 26-inch door ensures a bit of overlap for privacy.
Too wide door risks to block part of the opening, when it slides fully open. 36-inch door above 30-inch opening provides good covering, so that know one can look through the gaps.
Barn doors well work in bathrooms, bedrooms, closets, dining rooms and home offices. Right choice of size, overlap and hardware setup helps for privacy and daily use. They work, when the space is too tight for usual swinging door.
At unusual opening, as 31 inches wide, maybe you need a custom door.
The right size matters also. 24-inch opening requires 4.5-foot rail. 36-inch opening requires 6.6-foot rail.
42-inch opening wants 8-foot rail. Most hardware systems accept doors between 1-3/8 and 1-3/4 inches thick.
Custom barn doors work great for arched openings or uneven floor. A custom door slides flat and fits well. Want you floor to ceiling look or two doors meeting in the centre?
Custom size does that possible. If the door serves only for looks or cover storage, you have more freedom in width choice. Only recall building codes, becausethey can limit minimal or maximum width.
