💡 Tip 1: The Elbow Method — The most accurate way to set desk height is to sit comfortably, var your arms hang naturally, bend at the elbow to 90°, and measure from the floor to the bottom of your forearm. That measurement is your ideal desk surface height.
💡 Tip 2: Sit-Stand Desks — For sit-stand desks, set standing height so your elbows form a 90–110° angle with arms relaxed at your sides. Alternate between sitting and standing every 30–60 minutes. Most sit-stand desks range from 22" to 49" (56–124 cm).

Find the right height for desk is more important than most many folks think. Usually the standard height of desks falls between 28 and 30 inches, which well works for folks in 5’8″ to 5’10” when they seat on average chairs. But here the problem: that standard measure fits mostly taller people, around 6 feet tall.

So if one is a bit shorter, the so called “standard” desk can end up too high.

Find the Right Desk Height

The right ergonomic height for desk commonly comes much more below than one would expect. For folks in 5’5″ to 5’7″, the best height usually reaches of 25 to 27 inches. At 5’8″ one finds comfort in seating position with shoes at around 26 inches, while without them it gets to 24.5 to 25 inches.

Most many desk heights stay around 30 inches, but that range of 25 to 26 inches feels most natural for many. 29.5 inches even so are way too much for the majority.

The best desk height bases fully on own body shape, sitting position of the chair and even used shoes. Many err, when they treat the desk like the surface of a kitchen counter or simply set it until it “seems good”. Ergonomics do not work one-size-fits-all.

Commonly desk heights fall between 73 and 80 centimetres for the average folk, but that does not work fore each.

While sitting, the thighs had to stay almost parallel with the floor, with feet flat on the ground. The desk stand like this, that the elbows stay beside the body, with arms equal to the floor and the surface of the table. Here should not happen any curve in the back.

Ergonomic chairs like the Herman Miller Aeron and Steelcase Gesture can fall to 24 to 25 inches, but finding a good desk at that level is hard, because most many sit at around 30 inches.

Even folk at 6’3″ found, that dropping to sit-standing desk to 27 inches works best. Other folk at 6’3″ dropped his table to 26 inches with chair in highest position and felt clear change. For too high desk setups do well use height adjustable keyboard trays, footrests or standing desk.

The heights for standing desks also differ. Folk at 5’6″ maybe find 41 inches ideal for standing, with monitor at eye level and forearms fully parallel. Electric standing desks can range from around 28 to 46 inches, and some IKEA adjustable models go from 22 to 50 inches.

Some desks, like the Fully Modular or BenchMade Crossbuck, come in fixed 30 inches, which commonly works for work withcomputer. Resources like online calculators for desk height help to find the right setting for keyboard, monitor and chair.
